Mercury Retrograde Spring 2018

Mercury Retrograde Spring 2018

Spring 2018 Mercury Retrograde Guide

By Danielle Ribaudo

I have known and worked with Danielle for years, so naturally I was very excited when she wrote this article for us! In typical retrograde fashion, I am a little late in posting this, but don't you worry. Listed below are helpful tools that can apply to any timeframe. Enjoy!

What is Mercury Retrograde?

Mercury just went retrograde. Again. It feels like Mercury is always in retrograde. Which it kinda is. So here we are closing out Winter and entering Spring tiptoeing around waiting for Mercury to calm the F down and get back in line. But is that actually necessary? What does this all really mean? And how are we truly affected?

Mercury is the planet situated closest to our Sun. Therefore its orbit is shorter (and at a different speed) than the Earth’s. This means that 3 – 4 times a year the Earth eats Mercury’s dust and for about 3 weeks it goes “retrograde”. During this phase Mercury appears to be moving backwards. However, none of the planets ever move backwards, it is just an illusion from our vantage point here on Earth. Although, Mercury is much smaller than Earth, when it passes us with such speed it can tend to shake things up a bit.

The ruler of communication, Mercury relates to a broad spectrum of things. From speaking and listening, to reading and writing, clear thinking, coordination, technology, and travel. The list goes on. People often find themselves more prone to anxiety during this period and likely to become prisoner to their monkey-mind. Arguments ensue, computers crash, mail gets lost, and flights are delayed. And yes, Spring Break travelers, I hate to be the one to break it to ya - but Mercury is officially Retrograde March 22nd - April 15th. So be prepared because mistakes may be made.

What to do???

Have no fear! You'll get through this, you always do. Just remember to stick to a few guidelines listed below, this will ease the turbulence until Mercury goes direct again.

  •  Try not to make any major decisions. Avoid a career change, a big move, or signing any important documents.
  • If you must travel bring your spiritual toolbox.  Your journal, a good book, or download a meditation app to help you keep your cool while without the support of Mercury.
  • With all the technological glitches prepare yourself ahead of time. Back-up your data and be sure to download anything you may need before leaving the house. i.e. that meditation app.

But wait, there is more we can do than live in fear with our defenses up. There are two sides to every coin. Instead of focusing on all of the negative and what we should be avoiding, lets consider the upside and what we can shift our attention to.

What is this planetary phase asking us to do?

It is giving us a cue to slow down, to go inside and reflect. Consider this phase an opportunity to deal with any unfinished business. Mercury is great for reflection, re-learning, re-visiting, re-doing, and how fitting for this time of year, re-birth.

Helpful Tips

  • Give a project you have already been working on a little extra TLC. This is the time to fine-tune anything that is already in motion.
  • Connect with an old friend, the one you have been thinking about, but it felt like too much time has passed. It hasn’t. Now is the perfect time to reach out. *disclaimer - some relationships ended for a reason - you know who I'm talking about. Don't call that one!
  • Organize your home or office. Nothing like a little push to slow down and clear out unnecessary clutter.
  • Go inside. Take time to reflect over the past four seasons. Look at what has really worked for you and what has not. Regain your confidence and plant the seeds of Spring

Remember to keep your focus on things that have already been brewing and tie-up any loose ends there. This will prepare you to orbit any new plans into action – once Mercury is full speed ahead again, of course.

Danielle’s curiosity of holistic studies, both of the physical and energetic realm began at a young age. Being inspired by her mother, they would share books on spirituality and natural healing, then to have family discussions about them at the dinner table. Feeling supported to explore her passions she took courses at Scottsdale Community College on energy healing modalities that focused on balancing and cleansing the aura using Therapeutic Touch. In 2008 she deepened her yoga practice and completed her 200 hour yoga teacher training in Tempe Arizona. Since then she has had the opportunity to study with many amazing teachers aiding her to develop a style that pulls from various yogic backgrounds ranging in traditions from Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Anusara, and Iyenagar, as well as Yoga Therapy, and Meditation. Year of the Intuitive Heart

2018 starts with a full (super) moon in Cancer. As I write this, there is a massive cold front blanketing the country - crafting the perfect moment to restore inside, reflect on the past, and establish roots for the upcoming year.

Fire into Water

2017 was a year of fire. Wildly unpredictable this fire scorched away old thought patterns. By directing these embers downward to our lower chakras, we can rekindle the sparks that reside in all of us. Using the Cancer element of this 2018, we can cool the hot grounds of the upper chakras, and glance upon a fertile canvas of creativity. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the waters of intuition. When you raise your vibration and awareness- you raise the vibration and awareness of those around you. If you are reading this or practicing any form of mindful magic, you are an awakened individual. You have already accepted the path of higher consciousness!

Ways to Activate your Intuition

  • Conscious Breathing. Take a moment and slow your breath down. Next time someone is speaking to you, discover your breath. The breath is the one fact that makes us alive. This will draw you to the present moment, so you can actually listen to that person. The result is a boost in communication skills. Leading to clarity in creativity!
  • Movement. Get your heart rate up at least 5 times a week. Some of the best breakthroughs come when we break a sweat.
  • Head to Toe Self Care. Take care of your earth suit. Daily: meditation , oil pulling, dry brushing, clean oils on the body. Weekly: face masks, hot soaks, cold showers . Monthly: massage, energy work, camping, unique class (yoga, meditation, pottery, writing workshop, crafting/skills )
  • Detox. The clearer you are, the clearer you are. Strive towards becoming a clear channel to tell your story, relate to others, and find out what makes you tick. Take time away from screens, pay attention to ingredients in your food ( bonus points if you consume whole foods without packaging! ) Create discipline by daily rituals. And most importantly drink clean water!
  • Be specific. In order to manifest your hearts desire , you must be very clear with the universe. I'm talking about down to the size, weight, color, sex, location, date, etc specific. Visualize in your head. Otherwise, if you do it half-heartedly you will get that in return and kinda-sorta get what you want.

Lastly, don't take yourself too seriously. There is an ebb and flow to everything. Some days are going to be good and some are going to be challenging. You will find a sprinkle of wisdom in each day.

Mercury Retrograde Survival Toolkit

Mercury Retrograde Survival Toolkit

August 12th- September 5th

in Virgo + Leo

What does it all mean?

A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules.

2017 Mercury Retrograde Dates:

Dec.19,2016 - Jan.8,2017

April 9 - May 3

August 12 - September 5

December 2 - 22

Guidelines to follow

Don't Initiate Anything New

Mercury is the ruler of communication. During this retrograde period, you might experience issues with technology and relationships! So no matter how awesome your idea sounds, chances are you won't communicate them to others as effectively! (this is why i'm doing this post BEFORE retrograde ) Be mindful about signing any contracts, making relationship choices , and any big decisions about your life. Think of putting "RE" in front of actions - REcharge, REgroup, REthink, REdo.... Try not to overthink things, and realize this too shall pass

Do Finish Old Projects

Got a blog you never kept up? Started writing (or reading) a book you never finished? Wanting to get more exercise? Retrograde is the perfect time to re-tread old ground and get some closure. Use this as a time for self-refinement, and ask what can I learn from the past?

Don't Make Any Big Purchases

Whether it's a car or a phone, try to avoid coughing up money during the retrograde period. Mercury is famed for causing glitches in anything with moving parts - so you're bound to end up needing repairs. Plus it is the perfect time to save a little and treat yourself after the 'grade has passed.

DO Enjoy A Bit of Downtime

Get some much needed rest. Take naps. Focus on restoring (another "RE" word!) Light some candles, and soak in the tub. Get a massage . Reflect on your life. Meditate, keep a journal. Get deep with yourself, and use this time to figure out what you want. Plan your future - but don't act. Once the cycle is over, you'll feel refreshed and can bounce back into action with renewed vigor and a much clearer sense of what you should do.

DON'T Forget Dates

This period is known for making people forgetful, so check that calendar with an eagle eye. Prepare yourself for clashes, forgotten appointments and postponements. Also watch out for losing things, whether its vanishing keys or missing parcels in the post.

DO Expect Travel Delays

As the ruler of transportation, get ready for some serious travel hiccups, whether it's flight cancellations, broken down cars or planned trips that have to be cancelled for one reason or another. Don't panic, but have a plan B ready just in case.

DON'T Put Your Life On Hold

If you absolutely HAVE to do any of the above, go for it. Mercury retrograde is a bitch, but as long as you're ready to face any glitches head on, you're going to be fine.
